IELTS Study Lab · For teachers

Free material for your IELTS class — and a class set if you want to trial it

Three things on this page, all free and none of them requiring a sign-up: worksheets you may photocopy for your students, a planning tool you can send them, and a set of printed notebooks posted to your school at no cost.

1Worksheets you can photocopy

A sample of the notebook's pages as a printable PDF.

These are the pages teachers ask about most: the Writing Task 2 planning frame with its mistake-and-feedback tracker on the facing page, a guided Speaking session sheet, a Listening answer sheet, and the session log that sits at the front of each section. Blank frames, no content of ours to teach around.

Permission: you may print and photocopy this PDF for your own students, as many copies as your class needs, free of charge and with no obligation of any kind. Please leave the footer on the page. That is the only condition.

2A planner to send your students

Free web tool. No sign-up, nothing stored, works on a phone.

A student enters their practice-test scores, or answers twelve questions if they have not sat one yet, and gets a week-by-week plan with minutes allocated to the parts they are actually weakest on. It interleaves all four skills within each day rather than giving each skill its own day, and it schedules the mock tests.

It is useful for the gap you cannot fill in class time: what a student should do on the evenings you do not see them. Send the link, or put it on your course page.

3A free class set of the notebook

Printed copies, posted to your school. No cost and no obligation.

The IELTS Preparation Notebook is a 213-page write-in workbook for Academic and General Training: planning frames for both Writing tasks each facing its own mistake tracker, eight guided Speaking sessions, answer sheets, two full mock tests, and a session log at the start of every section.

We are giving sets to a small number of schools to find out how it behaves in a real classroom over two weeks. If you would like one, say roughly how many IELTS students you have and where to post it.

What we would like back is specific rather than complimentary: which pages your students actually wrote on, which they ignored and why, and whether you found it useful to set work from between lessons. If parts of it do not work, that is the most useful thing you could tell us, and we would rather hear it before the next print run than after.

We will reply with the postage details. If you would rather just write, info@ielts-study-lab.com reaches the same person.

What it is, and what it deliberately is not

It is

  • A container for whatever material you already teach from
  • A place where a student's corrections stay in one findable spot instead of on loose paper
  • A record you can look at in a tutorial to see where the marks are going
  • Structured so a student can see, at a glance, what they have and have not touched this week

It is not

  • A source of practice questions — there are none in it
  • A source of model answers — likewise none
  • A course, a syllabus, or anything that competes with what you teach
  • A substitute for your marking

The omissions are deliberate. A workbook that supplies its own questions has to be taught from, which makes it a rival to your course book. This one is empty on purpose so it can sit next to whatever you already use.

Questions teachers have asked

What is the catch?

The notebook is sold on Amazon and we would obviously like students to buy it. What is on this page is free with no strings: the worksheets are yours to copy, the planner needs no sign-up and collects nothing, and a class set costs you nothing and carries no obligation to buy, review or recommend anything.

Do you want reviews from my students?

Not as a condition of anything. Amazon's rules do not permit incentivised reviews and we will not ask your students for one. If someone chooses to review it after using it, they must say they received a free copy.

Academic or General Training?

Both. The Writing sections cover Task 1 in both its forms, and the rest of the test is common to the two.

Can we get copies for a whole term, not just a trial?

Yes — write and we will work out how. That is a better outcome for us than a one-off giveaway, so it is worth asking.

Where are you posting from?

Copies are printed and posted locally through Amazon in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Spain, France and Italy. Outside those eight we can send the PDF, but the book is a write-in notebook and a PDF is not a fair test of it.

Who is behind this

IELTS Study Lab is a small independent publisher, not a school and not an agency. The notebook came out of watching people prepare alone with their corrections scattered across four notebooks, three apps and the back of a printout, and never once going back to read any of it.

Write to info@ielts-study-lab.com — a person reads it.
